My Two-Bits Worth
Here is my opinion regarding getting younger people interested in swing dancing
Only two things really matter. They are:
1) Music preference
Current music rocks! But, most of the DJs play older, tired out songs that have been around for ages. Can DJs be made aware that there are a lot of songs that DJs put down as “rap”, but are actually of the “Hip-Hop” genre? Many “Hip-Hop” songs have a rhythm that fits swing dancing very well. Get Up Wid It! Gimme some Usher, Gnarls Barkley, and the Pussycat Dolls!
2) Location, Location, Location
Small, dim, smoky bars are not the place they want to be. They don’t have a lot of cash so the place has to be affordable. The beverage of choice for young people is soft drinks and beer, not wine and cocktails. They want large airy places with plenty of room to meet with their friends. They would rather stand than sit. They want places that are well-lit so they can check out what people are wearing. The only clique they will tolerate is their own.
