Topic of the Quarter

Dance Lessons

by Jim Watson, Mid-Ohio Boogie Club

This is an on-going feature for our ABA newsletter. I hope it will generate interest in sharing what we have learned in running our own club, so others may benefit. I am open to both topic suggestions and feedback on any topic within the newsletter.

The theme chosen for this quarter’s newletter was “Your club’s philosophy about dance lessons and how the lessons are handled.”. Some suggested ideas of what to discuss included:

bulletwhen does your club hold dance lessons,
bulletdo the lessons have a strict format or lesson plan; or are the lessons more spur of the moment,
bulletdoes the club pay for the instructors,
bulletdoes the club pay or use club members as instructors or does the club use professional instructors,
bulletdo members and non-members pay for the instruction,
bulletdoes your club set limits as to the number of people that can attend lessons, and
bulletdoes your club have large workshops.

I did a quick look around on the various ABA member club web site and discovered that most clubs seem to have dance lessons just prior to their regular dance. This is also true for my home club, the Mid–Ohio Boogie Club.

The schedule and fees I found on the web sites for these lessons vary from club to club. For eample:

1st Editor’s note: If you club is not listed, I am sorry. However, I did not receive any information nor was I able to find any information on your web site.

2nd Editor’s note: If you have an idea for a discussion topic, please send it along.

Atlanta Swing Dancers Club has a “Dance Improvement Program” which teaches beginner lessons in a series. One focus of this program is to insure that beginner dancers get to dance with accomplished dancers. They do this by having 2 or 3 “Practice Assistants” in each beginner class. Moreover, they rotate partners throughout the lesson so everyone gets to meet their fellow students. The lesson fee is $10 for club members and $15 for non-club members.

Memphis Boogie Bunch has tried the dance lessons two (2) times and it did not work for them. They used Carrie and Ronnie Griffin as their dance instructors.
