Why Should I Go To an
“Out of Town” Event?

Comments from a first timer

by Rich Kopels, Atlanta Swing Dancers

Surely, each of you has heard that from your own club members? I have heard it so many times and have tried to answer those asking in many ways. The following article was published in our club’s May 2005 newsletter. It was written by a “first time” attendee to our event and perhaps it is the best way to answer the question.

Smoky Mountain Boogie 2004 by Marilyn Savage

“Going to the “Boogie” expanded my horizons”

I was a first time attendee of Smoky Mountain Boogie this year. This was a terrific event that gave me lots of opportunities to dance, make friends, learn new techniques, and generally have a wonderful time. Even working the registration desk gave me the chance to know folks from other clubs as well as some from my own club that I hadn’t gotten to know yet.

As a newcomer to swing dancing this year, my fellow club members have graciously accepted me and taught me the basics. Going to the “Boogie” expanded my horizons and showed me that there are lots of different styles and many people that love dancing as much as I do.

I participated in workshops both Friday and Saturday mornings that were geared for both beginner and advanced dancers. Open dancing in the afternoon was a good way to get started as well because the crowds were smaller and you could mingle well. I browsed the vendor booths and bought another pair of dance shoes while I was at it. Usually by mid-afternoon, I needed a break so I’d do lunch and take a nap to get ready for another full night of dancing. By Saturday night, I had danced so much that I didn’t think I’d be able to walk back to my room, but managed to make it.

I’ve attended lots of conventions that were not so well planned and executed. My hat goes off to the team for a job well done. I wouldn’t change a thing except that I need more stamina!

While this is only one person’s perspective, I think that Marilyn speaks for many a dancer that made that out of town trek.

Editor’s note: Marilyn was speaking of business conventions in the last line, this was her first “dance convention.”
