Registration Desks
by Jim Watson, Mid-Ohio Boogie Club
This is an on-going feature for our ABA newsletter. I hope it will generate interest in sharing lessons learned in while running your club, so others may benefit. I am open to both topic suggestions and feedback on any topic within the newsletter.
It appeared from several discussions at the ABA Director’s meeting in January, several clubs continue to wrestle with how to best handle their registration desk. For this issue of ABA news, I asked the directors to explore the topic of the operation of their club’s registration desk – their problems and solutions. I thought it would be interesting to know:
| How does your club staff their registration desk? |
| Are there rotating club members who volunteer? | |
| Is there a registration committee to staff the desk? | |
| Do you use paid staff? |
| Does the club use reconciliation sheets? | |
| Does the club have only one person handle the money? | |
| Who has the responsibility, ie,the club’s treasurer or someone else? |
However, there were only two responses. The first was from Sandie Gammon from the Memphis Boogie Bunch. She basically answered a couple of the questions. The club’s VP and Sandie are the ones who sit at the registration desk. They used to have a rotating list at one time, however, the activities at the registration desk were never done correctly. They take in the money, pay the DJ, and then give what’s left, along with a reconciliation sheet, to the Treasurer. The only people who handled the money are the President, VP, and the Treasurer.
Editor’s note: This club still does not have a place to dance. So if you know someone who knows some, who is the brother of ... well you get the idea. Perhaps someone out there can help this club. The Memphis Boogie Bunch supports the ABA and this newsletter, even without a place to dance, so surely one of our ABA members can find a way to help them.
The second response was an article written by Ken and Debbie Butler from the Mid-Ohio Boogie Club.. It describes how they hired an individual to do most of the activities at the regitration desk. There is a link in their article to a PDF version of MBC’s reconciliation form. They hope you’ll find the information interesting and helpful.
