21st Boogie

On the Riverwalk

June 2007

Butch and Betty

This was supposed to be the “last year” that Betty and I were going to host “Boogie On The Riverwalk.” We had talked about it at length and decided we were tired, we wanted to travel, we wanted to party and “get a life.” Friends had said that there was a great party in Jacksonville every June, we should go to it sometime! After all, we had worked all but one year of the 21 “Boogies” (we actually worked the door at it). It isn’t just the week of the party that is busy, but pretty much it’s a year round effort to keep everything current and fluid. At least it is for Betty, she’s the heart and soul of the organizational work. (I am the grunt worker and the front man all rolled into one.)

As we neared zero hour and it was time to make it official, we shared with each other the numerous comments made to us both together and alone and how much “Boogie” meant to so many individuals, how people had met their husbands or wives at “Boogie,” or how their fondest memories of friends now gone, were at “Boogie.” Heck, we even had one wedding take place at “Boogie” in the ballroom on a Saturday afternoon – and their still married!

“Then Friday night as I D.J.’d and looked out over the dance floor, I was overcome with a sense of FAMILY and LOVE, and that did it.”

As the Party rolled on and we chatted some more, it became obvious that we both felt we would be leaving part of us if we stopped doing something that we loved and that had became so much a part of our life. But … we held firm, this was the very last one!!!! Easier said then done. Then Friday night as I D.J.’d and looked out over the dance floor, I was overcome with a sense of FAMILY and LOVE, and that did it. I guess we”ll ride this roller coaster at least one more time.

This may sound very corny to some people, but anyone who has ever put on a major function more than one time will understand totally the depth and width of the dedication of those who volunteer year after year. Many of them you never see or hear because they are performing behind the scenes work that is critical for success. If you enjoy their party – be sure you tell them, ALL OF THEM!!!

Because of circumstances beyond our control we have had to change our dates for next year. The “22nd Boogie On The Riverwalk” will be held July 9-13, 2008
